Why Outdoor Learning Matters in Reception

Outdoor play is heavily embedded within the EYFS statutory framework, naturally supporting learning across multiple areas, particularly Physical Development and Understanding the World. Getting outside allows 4–5 year olds to explore nature, manage risks, and develop their physical skills on a much larger scale.

Key Early Learning Goals (ELGs) supported include:

  • Gross Motor Skills: Negotiating space and obstacles safely, demonstrating strength, balance, and coordination.
  • The Natural World: Exploring the natural environment around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
  • Building Relationships: Working cooperatively, taking turns, and showing sensitivity to others' needs (essential when constructing Windproof Piggy Dens!).

Taking learning outdoors provides a multi-sensory environment that boosts well-being and encourages children to become resilient, confident learners.

How to Use These Activities

These activities are designed to be highly flexible, slotting seamlessly into your weekly planning, continuous provision, or adult-led group times. They cover a broad spectrum of outdoor sub-topics to ensure a rich and varied curriculum:

  • Nature walks and scavenger hunts to develop keen observation skills
  • Mud kitchen and outdoor role play for imaginative, messy play
  • Den building and large construction to encourage teamwork and problem-solving
  • Gardening and growing outdoors with our Window Bag Beans
  • Gross motor challenges to get hearts pumping and bodies moving
  • Maps and trails using a Playground Pirate Map to navigate the local environment

You can set up the Playground Pirate Map as a highly engaging adult-led hook, while Seasonal Soup Potions can be left as an enhancement in your mud kitchen for independent exploration. Mix and match to suit your outdoor space, resources, and the changing seasons!
