Story Stone Sorting: Story Structure Reading Activity for Reception

18 March 2026

Understanding story structure—the beginning, middle, and end—is a crucial building block for reading comprehension and early writing. Using tactile story stones, children can physically manipulate the narrative of a familiar tale, working collaboratively to get the events in order.

Materials Needed
  • 5-6 smooth flat stones or pebbles (collected from outside)
  • Permanent markers, acrylic paint, or paper and tape
  • A familiar traditional tale book (e.g., *The Three Little Pigs* or *The Enormous Turnip*)
  • A clear space on a table or carpet

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Prepare the Stones

Draw or tape pictures of key events from your chosen story onto the stones (e.g., pigs leaving home, straw house, wood house, brick house, wolf running away).

2. Read the Tale

Read the book together as a class to refresh their memories. Emphasise the structure by explicitly using the words beginning, middle, and end as you read.

3. Introduce the Concept

Show the jumbled stones. Ask: "Oh no, the story is mixed up! Which stone shows what happened at the very beginning?" Discuss how stories need an order to make sense.

4. Sort and Sequence

Put the children in pairs and let them physically arrange the stones in a line. Encourage them to debate with their partner if they disagree on the order.

5. Tell the Story

Once the stones are sequenced, have the children point to each stone from left to right and narrate the story structure aloud back to you.

Classroom Adaptations

Large class?

Create multiple sets of stones for different stories and rotate them as a continuous provision activity.

Limited resources?

Use recycled jam jar lids or circles of cardboard instead of stones.

Mixed ages?

Have younger ones focus on finding just the 'end' stone, while older ones sequence all five.

High ability?

Provide a blank stone and a whiteboard pen, asking them to invent a brand new ending.
